Due to the encompassing nature of pathology, departmental research activities occur in many disparate locations. Departmental research is led by faculty who are well placed in research centres and institutes, hospitals and agencies, and the Point Grey campus, and derive benefit from synergistic opportunties related to intra-disciplinary, multi-disciplinary, inter-disciplinary and trans-disciplinary interactions.
The common theme at all these sites is the commitment to effective, cutting-edge, ethical research, the results of which will reach beyond the academic realm, to better equip physicians, nurses and other health care professionals, and to effect positive change in the lives of our families, communities and ultimately, our world.
It all starts here.

Research is an essential part of our mission to find the causes of cancer, and to find better treatments to give patients longer life, and a better quality of life. Through collaborative research, we can quickly translate new discoveries into clinical applications.
There is a wide variety of research taking place at the BC Cancer Agency: traditional research based in the laboratory; translational research in partnership with patients; looking at how we provide counselling and support; and clinical trials where patients have the option to try new therapies.
The BC Cancer Agency’s five regional centres in Abbotsford, the Southern Interior, the Fraser Valley, Vancouver and on Vancouver Island conduct international clinical research trials seeking treatments that are more effective, work better at prolonging life, or have fewer side-effects.
Laboratory research takes place primarily in specific centres: the BC Cancer Agency’s Research Centre in Vancouver (which also hosts the Terry Fox Laboratory and Canada’s Michael Smith Genome Sciences Centre), and the BC Cancer Agency’s Deeley Research Centre, located at the Vancouver Island Centre in Victoria.
The BC Cancer Agency’s five regional centres also conduct international clinical research trials, seeking treatments that are more effective, work better at prolonging life, or have fewer side-effects.
We partner closely with research institutions, non-profit organizations, and industry around the world to help drive new discoveries forward quickly.
One of our largest supporters is the BC Cancer Foundation, which is dedicated to supporting research and enhancements to care at the BC Cancer Agency. One measure of the quality of research at the BC Cancer Agency is the success of our researchers in competing for grants both nationally and internationally.

BC Centre for Disease Control |
The BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) provides provincial and national leadership in public health through surveillance, detection, treatment, prevention and consultation services. The Centre provides both direct diagnostic and treatment services for people with diseases of public health importance and analytical and policy support to all levels of government and health authorities.
BCCDC investigates and evaluates the occurrence of communicable diseases in BC and is the provincial reporting centre for reportable cases and categories of communicable diseases. In addition, the Centre creates opportunities for scientists, health professionals, university and other partners to contribute their knowledge and experience in resolving the outstanding health challenges facing British Columbians.

We can’t make children better until we better understand what is wrong. That is why research is a vital part of the work we do at BC Children’s. By working with organizations such as the Child and Family Research Institute, our renowned physicians and scientists are studying everything from in-utero surgery and gene therapy, to a potential cure for diabetes. Our Vaccine Evaluation Centre conducts research into vaccines that can prevent illness and save lives.

Centre for Translational & Applied Genomics (CTAG) |
PHSA Laboratories' Centre for Translational and Applied Genomics (CTAG) is a genomics and molecular pathology core facility supported by a world class team of molecular pathologists with diverse clinical and research interests and technical skills.
CTAG operates at PHSA agencies including the BC Cancer Agency, BC Centre for Disease Control, BC Children’s Hospital and BC Women’s Hospital & Health Centre. CTAG offers a broad range of analytical services to the public and private sectors.
As a division of PHSA Laboratories, CTAG’s mission is to develop novel laboratory tests to improve the management of a diverse spectrum of disorders including cancer, infectious diseases, and inherited syndromes.
Services
CTAG services include DNA/RNA analysis, Expression analysis, Histology and Bioinformatics and Data analysis. The full service histology suite is equipped with state-of-the art tissue processing equipment capable of generating samples with unparalleled speed and quality. Samples can be fixed in less than three hours as compared to overnight when using the traditional approach.

UBC Centre for Blood Research |
The CBR is a multidisciplinary research institute. Thus, research activities are diverse, spanning the basic medical, clinical, social and applied sciences. Each CBR member leads a basic or applied research group and/or has major clinical responsibilities which are linked to blood-related diseases. Collaborations are frequently established, with the goal of translating biomedical and technological advances in understanding blood and blood-related processes, to improve health.
