ABOUT THE BMLSc PROGRAM

The Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science program is a two year undergraduate degree offered by the Department of Pathology in the Faculty of Medicine. Students enter year three after completing two years of science prerequisites.

Medical Laboratory Science is the study of the scientific principles underlying the disciplines practiced in hospital and medical research laboratories. Topics include:
Pathology - the study of the mechanisms of disease processes.
Histology - the study of cells and tissues under a microscope.
Medical Microbiology - the study of micro-organisms that cause disease.
Clinical Chemistry - the chemical analysis of blood and other body fluids.
Hematology - the study of blood and blood-forming tissues and their role in health and disease.
Toxicology - the study of the effects harmful (toxic) substances have on the body.
Immunopathology - the study of the immune system in disease processes.

The program covers the broad range of subjects that make up medical laboratory science. Students gain not only theoretical knowledge but also practical, hands-on experience in a wide variety of laboratory techniques.

Graduates are well prepared to pursue careers in further education in medicine, administration, research, industry, research & development, education or graduate studies (MSc/PhD).

The BMLSc Program began in 1980 to provide a high-quality University education in the discipline of Medical Laboratory Science. It exists to expand and enhance the career and educational opportunities available to students of the life sciences and Registered Medical Technologists. The first class graduated in the spring of 1982 and there have been 369 graduates to date.

NB: Completion of the BMLSc degree does not qualify students to write the National Certification examination of the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS), which is a requirement to obtain the Registered Technologist (RT) certification.  The RT certification is required to work in a medical laboratory within a hospital or private laboratory in Canada.
