Frequently Asked Questions

When can I begin studying?
Study for the Certificate begins in January only. Students begin with either Path 427 or Path 467 (or both).

Can I get credit toward the Certificate for courses I've alredy taken?
Credit cannot be granted for previously completed courses.  All 4 of the required courses must be completed in order to obtain the IPC Certificate.

Why are the courses “blocked” from registration?
These specialized courses are blocked from general registration because enrolment is limited and instructor permission is required. Students must obtain instructor permission prior to registering in the course.

Why do I have to register in the WAITLIST (99X) section?
ALL students register in the waitlist.  Only students who complete the registration process, register in the waitlist section AND have obtained instructor permission will be transferred to the regular course section (99C).

When will I know if I’ve gotten into the course?
Once you have instructor permission and register in the WAITLIST section and providing space is available, your registration will be updated to the on-line course section within 2-3 days. You should check your registration through the Student Service Centre.

I’m already a UBC student. Do I still need instructor permission?
Yes. Click here to request permission. I WANT TO TAKE A SINGLE COURSE...

What is the time commitment for the courses?
You can expect to commit 2 hours/week of contact time to each course. However, given the nature of an on-line course, there will be required research, reading and preparation time outside of the time you are on-line. The course requires you to login regularly and participate in on-line discussion or group work. In most cases, you don't need to be on-line at the same time as your instructor or classmates.

What is the time commitment for Path 451 (Clerkship)?
Option A: Basic Infection Control Practicum: The expected contact time with the mentor should be 45 hours; an additional 40 hours of time is expected for associated reading and report writing.

Option B: Mentored In-depth Review of an Infection Control Topic: Expected contact time with the mentor is 18-24 hours. Expected length of the independent study is 60 hours (including reading and report writing).

Will the IPC Certificate appear on my academic transcript?
No. Each of the four courses will appear on your academic transcript with grades. The certificate is not a conferred degree but a certificate of completion and is not listed on your transcript.

Can I get a job with this certificate?
The IPC Certificate is a continuing education certificate and does not prepare one for a specific career in the medical field.
