GENERAL PATHOLOGY RESIDENCY TRAINING AT UBCDefinition General Pathology is that branch of medicine concerned with all aspects of laboratory investigation in health and disease. The discipline incorporates both morphological and non-morphological diagnostic techniques in the areas of Anatomic Pathology, Medical Biochemistry, Medical Microbiology, Hematopathology, and Transfusion Medicine. General Objectives On completion of the education program, the residents will be competent to function as consultants in General Pathology and medical laboratory directors. This will require acquisition of a sufficient level of skill in the separate disciplines of Anatomic Pathology, Medical Biochemistry, Medical Microbiology, Hematopathology and Transfusion Medicine to serve as a consultant within the context of a regional or community hospital. UBC Residency Training Program in General Pathology Widely acknowledged as one of the strongest residency training programs in General Pathology in Canada, the UBC program offers a broad-based experience that is characterized by a wealth of excellent case material, expert teaching staff and dynamic curriculum. The 5-year training program includes both mandatory and elective rotations that are typically scheduled as 3-month blocks. The PGY-1 year is a clinical year in keeping with the philosophy that “good pathologists are also good clinicians”. The PGY-2 through PGY-4 years consist of rotations through the various specialties of Laboratory Medicine that cumulatively provide a broad, well rounded experience in fulfilment of Royal College objectives. In the PGY-5 year, rotations in community settings and separate elective time are also included. Historically, UBC has had amongst the highest successful pass rate at the Royal College examinations of any General Pathology Program in Canada, and trainees have gone on to rewarding and highly satisfying careers.
