- Blood smear preparation
- Staining Identification of blood cells
- Bacterial identification and determination of susceptibility to antibiotic drugs: Gram stain morphology, colony characteristics, enzyme reactions, antibiotic susceptibilities, antigenic properties and biochemical reactions
- Tissue culture techniques
- DNA extraction, purification and quantification
- Molecular biology techniques, such as DNA fingerprinting of VNTR loci using PCR and gel electrophoresis
- SDS-PAGE and agarose gel electrophoresis
- Western blotting
- Ion exchange and gel filtration chromatography
- Fast Protein Liquid Chromatography (FPLC)
- GC-MS, chemiluminometry, atomic absorption spectrometry, fluorometry
- Photomicrography using both light and transmission electron microscopes
- Processing and sectioning of tissues for light microscopy
- Immunohistochemistry and other histochemical methods
- Oral presentation and discussion-leading techniques
- Critical appraisal of scientific papers
- Self-appraisal and giving constructive feedback
- Scientific literature search skills
- Laboratory safety procedures (radioisotope, biohazard and chemical safety; WHMIS)
